Just Bee yourself!
I am a huge Weezer fan. I love everything about them—the simple rock guitar, the awkward band members, and the way their music spoke to me as a nerd. Don’t get me wrong, the Blue Album (Weezer’s debut album) is fantastic, but for me, their true genius shines in the album Pinkerton.
Rivers Cuomo himself described Pinkerton as a “high school journal” that will haunt him forever because of its extremely corny and raw, teen-like emotions. But that’s what makes it so great—it’s unapologetically him. It doesn’t hold back or try to polish its feelings. It just puts everything out there, and that’s it.
That album inspired me to start this blog. I imagine that when I look back on this blog in the future, I might feel embarrassed to share these young thoughts of mine. But so what? This blog will be my “high school journal,” and if it ends up haunting me one day, so be it. At least it will be authentic. This is a place where I can put my thoughts out there, raw and unfiltered, no matter how awkward or cringe-worthy they might seem. It’s my way of embracing the honesty and vulnerability that makes Pinkerton so powerful to me.
Everywhere I look, I feel like authenticity is becoming rarer—whether in music, social media, or everyday interactions. All the jokes feel like the same 10 trendy memes recycled from the week before. But authenticity is exactly what we need more of. Being an NPC is just betraying yourself.
I really wish authenticity was celebrated as much now as it was when the Blue Album debuted. Weezer made being uncool cool—they embraced it. And that’s what I hope to do here: my own platform to be myself. You should too
